America's small and independent craft brewers (see Craft Brewing Statistics) are making special plans for the annual American Craft Beer Week (May 11-17), a national celebration highlighting the culture and contributions of craft beer. These brewers want the week to inspire beer enthusiasts to declare their independence by supporting breweries that produce fewer than 2 million barrels of beer a year and are independently owned. In the works are special brewery tours, beer and food pairing events, special release craft beers and festivals all across the U.S. A Declaration of Beer Independence is available on the program web site and the American Craft Beer Week fan page on Facebook, which participating breweries are encouraging beer enthusiasts to sign. Local breweries and restaurants will also post a copy of the Declaration of Beer Independence so that patrons can show their support.

Changed to a weeklong event in 2006, the inaugural American Craft Beer Week was recognized by the U.S. Congress with House Resolution 753 (PDF file). The week has continued to grow with interest and support from beer enthusiasts and the media. In 2007, more than 150 brewers registered their community celebrations.

30 years ago, two Colorado homebrewers acquired a brewery license, retrofitted a goat-shed into a brew house and founded Colorado's First Microbrewery -- and the oldest of the operating modern craft breweries in the United States. Join us at 5 pm as we welcome back those two pioneers, David Hummer and Stick Ware, for an informal evening of tasting and beer war stories, hosted by our Brewmaster, David Zuckerman.

Start: 05/12/2009 6:00 pm

For american craft beer week Bull and Bush sent out an e-mail to its frequent customers re a free pouring. Tomorrow at 6:00 there are free pints of No-Coast IPA from 6-7. Figured this was a good time for an improptu Bull and Bush meetup with the club (even though I know there are a lot of club happenings this week.)

So, if you are able, stop by the Bull and Bush 4700 Cherry Creek South Dr

Have you had our St. Vrain Tripel? Good on you, if you have. That would mean you've been enjoying our brews for some time now. We haven't released the St. Vrain since summer of 2006...and it's finally back! Friday, May 15th is already going to be a good time in the Tasting Room with live music and the Oak-Aged Imperial Stout on cask. Spicy on the nose, warming going down, the St. Vrain is deceptively drinkable. Enjoy!

Start: 05/15/2009 6:00 pm

On May 15 at 6:00 p.m. I have scheduled an evening with Peter Bouckaert, head brewer of New Belgium brewery. Peter has graciously agreed to present to the Rock Hoppers, just us, no one else, about the experimental beers of New Belgium, ie: La Folie, Kevin's Ale, Le Fleur Misseur, Bier De Mars and others. Expect some very unique sampling and an extremely interesting discussion with Peter about "the bugs" as he calls them. I don't know how many of you have seen Peter speak before, but this is not an opportunity to be missed. He is, quite frankly, incredible.

Please, please, please make every effort to attend this event as Peter and New Belgium are going out of their way to provide this for our club. You will have an opportunity for essentially one on one discussion with Peter about anything you want to know. He's a Belgian (born and educated) master brewer. Sign up by May 5 as I have promised New Belgium a head count for logistic purposes.

Car pooling (or overnight in Fort Collins) is encouraged and I'm sure arrangements on that will follow.

Start: 05/15/2009 6:00 pm

We are having an American Craft Beer Week Celebration on the 15th from 6-8pm. $10 cover includes special releases and cask-conditioned beers.

Twisted Pine is creating a special Braggot for Craft Beer Week, which will be on tap all week and help us remember that the craft beer industry is all about fun, invention and getting a little crazy! On Friday, May 15th, we are hosting a Craft Beer Week Party, with live music from local band "The Peters Brothers" and frozen T-shirt contests! Well-behaved dogs are always welcome at our Ale House! "It's not the size of the brewery, it's how you use it!"

Here's the scoop, the club is looking at ways to raise money for NHC. There currently are a lot of exciting plans in the works for NHC this year and in coming years, but we need the funds to make these plans a reality. So......

On May 29-31 our neighborhood, Clarke Farms, is having its community garage sale. Since the advertising will be done for us and fairly high traffic is expected, we're looking to hold a NHC fundraising garage sale  on Saturday the 30th.

Over the next few weeks, it's a great time to do a little spring cleaning and collect any unwanted items from your house you want to donate to the garage sale. The week before the sale, we'll take drop offs at our house, particularly for larger items. You can also bring items to the May meeting to pass off to us. We're going to price everything to sell, no offers rejected, and no items will be returned to the donees. Anything not sold after the sale will be taken to Goodwill. Donating items for the garage sale is purely voluntary, but the club appreciates everyone who is willing to participate. If you're willing to donate items, please sign up, so we can get a rough head count on those willing to participate.

Anyone who wants to stop by and help "man" the garage sale is also most appreciated. All money raised goes to the NHC fund which is for schwag, t-shirts to sell, etc, not for individual travel costs (I'm sure the NHC plans will be discussed more in depth at upcoming meetings).

We'll also likely hold a brew day in conjunction with the garage sale as that will be another means of gathering interest to our sale.

From: Janis Gross [mailto:janis@brewersassociation.org] Sent: Wednesday, May 13, 2009 12:46 PM Subject: NHC Information   Hi everyone, Congratulations to all of the First Round winners of the AHA National Homebrew Competition (NHC) this year!   I know all of you are anxiously awaiting the information you'll need to send your entries to the Final Round of the competition. Most of this information can be found in the National Homebrew Competition Rules & Regulations document, but I'll highlight it here as well.   If your entry placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, of if you have received an Administrative Advance from me, then I will send you the information on where to send the Final Round bottles.  This mailing will most likely start next week and take all week to complete.   + You need to send 3 bottles for the Final Round.  If you only have 1 or 2 bottles, then send those. + The entries are due between June 1st and June 10th. + You will need to supply an entry/recipe form for your entry.  I am working on making this an online form and will have that information in the package I send to you.   The score sheets should all be in the mail by now.  If you have not received your score sheets yet, please be patient as the First Round Site Directors have lives and jobs too.  If you were waiting for your score sheets in order to re-brew, you've probably waited too long at this point.   I hope this helps!  Good luck in the Final Round of the AHA National Homebrew Competition!
